ABOUT THE PROJECT
Steep Point is one of WA’s most iconic land-based game fishing locations—but beneath the surface it tells a different story. On our cleanup dives we’re finding a tangled mix of pollution: fishing line, lures, lead sinkers, plastic, fishing rods, beer bottles and more. This debris can entangle and injure marine life, damage habitat, and chip away at the pristine ecosystem that makes Shark Bay so special.
That’s why the Clean Up Steep Point Project exists. Led by the Shark Bay Eco Tours Dive Team and supported by other dive professionals contributing their skills and time, we’re removing harmful debris from the seafloor and giving this remote coastline the protection it deserves. It’s challenging work—often slow, hands-on, and meticulous—but every item we lift out is one less hazard in the water.
We’re proud to donate our time and expertise, but fuel and equipment aren’t free. Reaching Steep Point and running safe, effective cleanup dives requires boat fuel, dive gear and safety equipment, lift and cutting tools, collection bags, and the logistics to transport and dispose of what we remove. Your donation directly supports these practical costs and helps us get out there more often, remove more debris, and make a bigger impact.
In 2025, this became a true community effort, teaming up with the Malgana Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) Rangers, Perfect Nature Cruises, Shark Bay War On Waste, and the combined teams of Ocean Park and Shark Bay Eco Tours. If you’d like to help protect Steep Point from below the surface, we’d be grateful for your support.
