Ocean Park Aquarium includes a rehabilitation facility for sick and injured marine reptiles.
There are only seven species of sea turtle worldwide, with six found in Australian waters. All of these species are considered endangered due to human impact – ingesting or getting entangled in pollution, boat strikes and low water quality to name a few.
Our facility has been developed as a partnership with the Shark Bay Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW), with eight turtles being rescued by locals around Shark Bay and the wider Coral Coast Region (Exmouth) in 2014/15.
These animals are rescued, rehabilitated and then released within Shark Bay. The person who rescues the turtle is the one who gets to name it.
The animals are kept on display in the public aquarium during their recovery so locals can visit and bring loved ones to show off their rescue efforts.
Ocean Park is situated 8km south of Denham and approximately 30km from Monkey Mia on Shark Bay Road. Located on Western Australia’s rugged and spectacular west coast, Ocean Park is nearly the most western most point of Australia.
